Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - Southeast Missouri is experiencing the first wave of a two-part winter storm, with light snow continuing through Tuesday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until noon for Iron, Jefferson, Madison, Perry and Washington Counties. Snowfall accumulations of 1-2 inches are expected, with localized areas potentially reaching 3 inches. Minor travel impacts are possible, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Light snow or flurries may persist into the afternoon.
A stronger winter storm will move in early Wednesday morning and last through Wednesday evening, bringing the potential for significant snowfall (5-7 inches) across the region. Central and northeast Missouri, as well as west-central Illinois, have a high chance (70-80%) of receiving at least 4 inches of snow.
Along the I-44 (MO) and I-70 (IL) corridors, a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected, though uncertainty remains regarding precipitation types. Further south and east, temperatures near freezing will determine whether precipitation falls as freezing rain or regular rain. If surface temperatures remain above freezing, ice accumulations will be limited to elevated surfaces.
Major Travel Impacts Expected
This system is expected to cause widespread travel impacts across the region. With the uncertainty surrounding the transition zones between snow, sleet, and freezing rain, travelers are urged to monitor forecasts closely. Stay tuned to KFMO B104 News for updates on changing conditions.
