Potosi Woman Seriously Injured in Highway 21 Crash Monday Evening

Washington Co., Mo. (KFMO) - A two-vehicle crash on northbound Highway 21, just north of Old 21, left a Potosi woman seriously injured Monday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:55 p.m. when the driver of a 2017 Ford Explorer, 21-year-old man from Potosi, became distracted while attempting to retrieve a dropped lighter to light a cigarette. His vehicle struck the rear of a 2017 Lincoln MKX, also traveling northbound. After being hit, the Lincoln ran off the right side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a ditch.

The driver of the Lincoln, a 49-year-old woman from Potosi, was seriously injured in the crash. She was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis for treatment. Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene.

Authorities report both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
