City of Farmington to Issue Water Service Line Inventory Notifications

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - The City of Farmington is taking action to comply with the latest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines aimed at reducing lead exposure in drinking water. Starting soon, Farmington City Light & Water customers whose water service line materials are classified as unknown will receive letters to help identify these materials. The city’s initiative aligns with the EPA’s proposed Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI), which mandate that water providers assess and report on the materials used in customer-owned service lines.

Under the new requirements, customers will be given resources to identify their service lines’ materials using simple tests such as visual inspection, scratching, and magnet tests. The city will provide these details within the mailed notices and on their website. In addition, free lead test kits will be available at the Development Services office for any resident interested in testing their drinking water.

Customers whose service lines are confirmed to contain lead or require replacement can explore financial options offered by the city. While the city is required to cover the replacement of the city-owned section of a lead service line, customers are responsible for replacing the customer-owned portion. Additional funding support may be available through low-interest loans and grants made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Farmington has a strong track record of meeting or exceeding EPA standards, with regular lead testing that consistently reports levels below the EPA’s action threshold. The city encourages customers to take part in this inventory process to ensure community health and compliance with the latest drinking water standards.
