Containment of Sugar Fire Reaches 75% as Firefighters Make Significant Progress

Douglas Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Efforts to contain the Sugar Fire in Mark Twain National Forest near Glade Top Trail advanced Tuesday night, with firefighters successfully increasing containment to 75% on the Ava/Cassville/Willow Springs Ranger District. Located roughly 12 miles south/southwest of Ava, the fire continues to burn in glades filled with dry cedar and timber litter.

Fire crews conducted targeted firing operations from roadways Tuesday night, removing fuel between the fire front and established containment lines, effectively halting the fire's progression. This strategic move secured the fire's northern and eastern flanks.

On Wednesday morning, firefighters responded to a spot fire on the north side. Swift action from crews on the ground helped prevent the spot fire from spreading, and additional firefighters arriving on scene today are working toward securing the remaining west and south edges of the blaze.

Rain is expected in the area tonight, which could aid in further containment efforts.
