(Cape Girardeau, MO) Authorities are investigating a shooting inside the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau Sunday afternoon.
According to the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad, at 2:33 p.m., the Cape Girardeau Police Department received multiple calls regarding gunfire inside the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.
It is reported that a fight broke out on the second floor of the Show-Me Center, near the top of the stairs. The suspect shot a gun, and a bullet hit two victims, in the lower part of their bodies. School Resource Officers with the Cape Girardeau Public School District were on-scene for high school graduation and were quickly able to detain a person of interest, and render aid to two victims. The person of interest is in custody at the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
During the incident, Cape Central High School was holding their graduation ceremony. The incident forced the ceremony to stop and be post poned. Superintendent Dr. Howard Benyon said in a social media post, “fortunately, no students or staff members were injured.” School had also been canceled for Monday.
Officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety, Cape Girardeau Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jackson Police Department, and ATF responded to the scene to assist in building security and crowd control.
