Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Firefighters across the region have had a challenging couple of days, battling three separate structure fires in extreme cold conditions. The fires, including a barn fire and two residential structure fires, required significant resources and response efforts.
The first fire occurred late Sunday night, February 16, when a volunteer firefighter spotted a barn fire near Castle Ranch Rd. and Twinbrook Rd. in Jefferson County. The firefighter radioed in the report at 10:48 p.m., prompting a first-alarm response. Crews arrived to find multiple hay bales burning next to the barn. Firefighters quickly deployed two hand lines to suppress the flames, but the fire required extensive overhaul efforts. Machinery was used to help clear debris, and crews remained on scene until 1:15 a.m.
Hours later, at 3:34 a.m. Monday, February 17, crews were dispatched to assist the Goose Creek Fire Department with a residential fire in the 8800 block of Racoon Dr. in St. Francois County. When first responders arrived, they found the home fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters focused on suppression efforts while also performing salvage and overhaul.
Shortly after clearing that scene, emergency crews were called to another residential structure fire at 5:15 a.m. Monday on Brook Hollow Rd. in Jefferson County. While en route, responders were advised of a working fire. Cedar Hill Fire Protection District arrived at 5:32 a.m. to find a two-story home with flames spreading through the roof. Firefighters deployed a hand line for fire attack while Chief 5800 assumed command. Additional fire crews assisted with suppression and water supply.
At 5:40 a.m., worsening conditions forced the evacuation of interior crews, and a second alarm was requested for additional manpower. The fire was brought under control by 6:47 a.m., with extensive salvage and overhaul efforts following. The Fire Marshal responded to investigate the cause.
Despite freezing temperatures and back-to-back calls, crews successfully contained the fires. No injuries have been reported, and investigations into the causes are ongoing.
